Scholars, critics and art practitioners have generally agreed that the collective GSRBI has played an influential art part in shaping the development of contemporary art in Indonesia. However, there is very little reliable material or comprehensive information that can be found about GSRBI. To our knowledge, Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia edited by Jim Supangkat (Gramedia, Jakarta, 1979) is the only official document available about the collective. Over the past few decades, there has been little critical review or analysis about GSRBI’s position within the wider Indonesian art history, nor has their practice been contextualised within the socio-political environment of 1970s - one of the key turning points that has impacted Indonesia’s art practice.
