“As if there is no sun” is a homecoming exhibition from the 58th Carnegie International: “Is it morning for you yet?” in Pittsburgh, USA that showcased the collections of Griya Seni Hj. Kustiyah Edhi Sunarso, Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics, Jakarta Arts Center Taman Ismail Marzuki, Pelita Harapan University Museum, Affandi Museum, and OHD Museum.

Initiated by the research group Hyphen—, this exhibition presents a break from the tracing, research and archiving work carried out by Hyphen— since 2018. The title “As if there is no sun” is quoted from writer Nugroho’s critique of the works in the Sanggar Pelukis Rakyat exhibition in Jakarta, 1957, published in Harian Rakyat. He reminds us that while the sun is present in Kustiyah’s work, almost all of her paintings—and those of most of her fellow painters—tend to have a cold hue…
